After more than 35 years in the jewelry business, we've seen just about everything when it comes to jewelry care. Most damage doesn't happen because someone isn't careful with their jewelry. Usually, it's the little things people don't realize can cause problems over time.
1. Wearing Jewelry in the Pool or Hot Tub
Chlorine and other chemicals can be hard on precious metals and may weaken certain parts of your jewelry over
time. It's always best to take your jewelry off before getting in.
2. Sleeping or Exercising in Fine Jewelry
It's easy to forget you're wearing it, but working out or sleeping in your jewelry can put unnecessary pressure on
prongs, chains, and settings. Rings can also get caught or knocked without you realizing it.
3. Waiting Too Long to Have Your Prongs Checked
This is probably one of the biggest ones we see. A slightly loose prong may not seem like a problem until a
diamond is missing. A quick inspection can often catch something before it becomes an expensive repair.
4. Cleaning Jewelry With the Wrong Products
Not every cleaning method you see online is safe for every piece of jewelry. Some gemstones and finishes require special care. When you're unsure, it's always better to ask before trying something at home.
5. Ignoring Something That Doesn't Feel Right
If a stone feels loose, a clasp isn't closing properly, or a ring suddenly feels different, don't wait. Small repairs are usually much easier to take care of before they become bigger problems.
After all these years, one thing I've learned is that a little preventative care goes a long way. Fine jewelry is meant to be worn and enjoyed - you just want to take care of it along the way.
