An engagement ring is given at the proposal and usually holds a center diamond. A wedding ring (wedding band) is exchanged by both partners at the ceremony and is usually a plain or diamond-lined band. They are not the same ring: in the US most people wear both on the left ring finger, with the wedding band on first.
Engagement Ring vs Wedding Ring at a Glance
An engagement ring marks the proposal and the promise to marry; a wedding ring marks the marriage itself and is exchanged during the ceremony.
| Attribute | Engagement ring | Wedding ring (wedding band) |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Promise to marry, given at the proposal | Marks the marriage, exchanged during the ceremony |
| Who gives it | One partner gives it to the other at the proposal | Both partners exchange rings during the vows |
| Who picks it | Traditionally the proposer; many couples now shop together | Usually chosen together |
| Who wears it | Traditionally the partner who was proposed to | Both spouses |
| Typical design | Center diamond or gemstone, often with accent stones (solitaire, halo, three-stone) | Plain metal band, or pavé, channel-set or eternity diamonds without a raised center stone |
| Profile | Higher; center stone sits above the band | Low profile, built for daily wear |
| Typical width | Varies by setting | Women's bands about 1.5-3 mm; men's about 4-8 mm |
| Average cost (US) | Natural diamond ring about $7,000 (1.6 ct center); lab-grown about $4,300 (2.0 ct center), The Knot Real Weddings Study 2026 | Usually far less than the engagement ring; diamond eternity bands can approach engagement-ring prices |
| When to buy | 2-3 months before the proposal | 3-6 months before the wedding |
| Where it is worn (US) | Left ring finger, alone until the wedding | Left ring finger, under the engagement ring |
| Maintenance | Prong check and cleaning every 6-12 months | Occasional polishing and resizing |
In US usage, "wedding ring" and "wedding band" mean the same ring - the band exchanged at the ceremony. Timing matters for both purchases. Plan on 2-3 months before the proposal for the engagement ring and 3-6 months before the wedding for the bands. That leaves room for sizing and any custom work.
Wedding Ring vs Wedding Band vs Bridal Set
A wedding ring and a wedding band are the same thing in US usage, one ring exchanged at the ceremony. A bridal set is an engagement ring and a wedding band designed and sold together. The metal, diamond size and profile match, so the two rings sit flush on the finger. An eternity band carries diamonds or gemstones set all the way around the band. An anniversary band is a band, often a half- or full-eternity style, added later - frequently for an anniversary - and worn as a third ring. A contoured band (also called curved or notched) is shaped to sit flush against an engagement ring with a low or unusually shaped center stone.
| Term | What it is | When it is added |
|---|---|---|
| Engagement ring | Ring with a center diamond or gemstone, given at the proposal | At the proposal |
| Wedding band / wedding ring | Plain or diamond-lined band exchanged at the ceremony | During the vows |
| Bridal set | Engagement ring and band designed together to sit flush | Bought together, before the proposal or wedding |
| Eternity band | Diamonds or gemstones set around the entire band | At the wedding or any later milestone |
| Anniversary band | A band, often half- or full-eternity, marking an anniversary | Years after the wedding, as a third ring |
| Contoured band | Curved or notched band shaped around the engagement ring | At the wedding, when a straight band will not sit flush |
Tradition puts the engagement ring in the proposer's hands, while couples usually choose the wedding bands together. That split is softening. The Knot 2024 Jewelry & Engagement Study found nearly four in five people who were proposed to had some involvement in selecting or buying the ring. Most still said the proposal itself was a surprise.
For a matched look, keep the metal consistent - 14k yellow gold with 14k yellow gold, platinum with platinum - and keep the band widths similar.
How to Wear an Engagement Ring and Wedding Band
US custom stacks the wedding band on the finger first. It sits closest to the heart, with the engagement ring on top. That order is tradition, not a rule, and plenty of people reverse it for comfort or fit.
On the wedding day, many brides move the engagement ring to the right hand before the ceremony. The left ring finger stays bare so the band slides on unobstructed during the vows; afterward the engagement ring returns to the left hand, on top of the band.
Later, an anniversary or eternity band can join the stack to make a three-ring set. Some people also wear only the low-profile band for sports, hands-on work or travel, and keep the higher engagement setting safe at home.
Which Hand Do the Rings Go On?
In the US and most Western cultures, both rings sit on the fourth finger of the left hand. The custom traces to an old belief in the vena amoris, a "vein of love" thought to run from that finger straight to the heart. In Poland, Greece and parts of Eastern Europe, wedding rings are traditionally worn on the right hand instead. For more on how the custom shifts by country, see our guide to wedding ring traditions around the world.
Soldering the Two Rings Together
After the wedding, a jeweler can solder the engagement ring and band into one piece so they stop spinning and rubbing against each other. The trade-off: both rings must be resized together later, and the set can no longer be worn separately. At our Marlton bench, all soldering and resizing work is done on site, never shipped out.
How Much Engagement Rings and Wedding Bands Cost
According to The Knot Real Weddings Study 2026, which surveyed couples married in 2025, the average natural diamond engagement ring cost about $7,000. The center stone averaged 1.6 ct. Lab-grown diamond rings averaged about $4,300, with a 2.0 ct average center stone.
An earlier benchmark puts the shift in context: The Knot 2024 Jewelry & Engagement Study reported a national average of $5,200. Lab-grown stones explain part of the gap - buyers get a larger center stone, 2.0 ct on average, for roughly $2,700 less.
The center stone is the main cost driver of an engagement ring. A wedding band carries little or no diamond weight, so it usually costs far less, though a full diamond eternity band can approach engagement-ring prices. For a deeper breakdown, see our guide to the average engagement ring cost.
Where the "Three Months' Salary" Rule Came From
The three months' salary rule is a De Beers advertising guideline, not a financial rule. During the Great Depression, De Beers ads in the 1930s suggested spending one month's salary on a diamond ring. The figure later grew to two months, then three. The Knot calls the rule "just marketing," and most couples spend far less than three months' pay. We trace the full campaign history in our post on the three-month ring rule.
A Short History of Engagement and Wedding Rings
Wedding rings date back about 5,000 years to ancient Egypt. There, the unbroken circle stood for eternity. The Romans gave iron betrothal rings called the anulus pronubus to seal an agreement between families. In 850 AD, Pope Nicholas I declared the engagement ring a statement of marital intent. In 1477, Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave Mary of Burgundy a diamond ring, an early recorded diamond engagement ring. Renaissance couples exchanged gimmel rings - two or three interlocking hoops - and posy rings engraved with verses. Men's wedding bands became common only in the 20th century, especially during World War II.
Engagement Ring and Wedding Band Styles
Engagement ring settings fall into a handful of core designs:
- Solitaire - a single center stone on a plain band.
- Halo - a ring of small diamonds around the center stone.
- Hidden halo - that diamond ring tucked under the center stone, visible from the side (see hidden halo vs classic halo rings).
- Three-stone - a center stone flanked by two side stones.
- Vintage-inspired - milgrain edges or filigree metalwork drawn from older periods.
- East-west - an elongated stone set horizontally across the finger.
- Bezel - a metal rim wrapping the center stone instead of prongs.
Whatever the setting, the 4Cs - cut, color, clarity and carat - set the center stone's look and price.
Wedding bands run simpler:
- Plain metal - an unadorned gold or platinum band.
- Pavé - small diamonds set close together across the surface.
- Channel-set - diamonds held in a groove between two metal walls.
- Eternity - stones all the way around the band.
- Contoured - curved or notched to hug the engagement ring.
- Textured - hammered or brushed finishes.
- Engraved - patterns or dates cut into the metal.
Most US men choose plain bands in 14k gold or platinum, typically 4-8 mm wide. Men's diamond bands stay relatively uncommon. Men's engagement rings exist and are growing, but they remain the exception - we cover that in our post on whether men wear engagement rings.
Steven Billig designs engagement rings and matching bands at our Marlton, NJ bench, where Billig Jewelers has operated as a family-owned jeweler and manufacturer since 1986. Designing both rings together solves the flush-fit problem before it starts.
FAQ
Is the engagement ring the same as the wedding ring?
No. The engagement ring is given at the proposal and symbolizes the promise to marry; the wedding ring is exchanged at the ceremony and marks the marriage. After the wedding, most people in the US wear both stacked on the left ring finger.
Can I use my engagement ring as my wedding ring?
Yes. Some couples use one ring for both roles, for simplicity, budget or style. A common approach is to have the ring engraved or blessed during the ceremony to mark its second role.
Is it normal to wear an engagement ring and a wedding band together?
Yes. Most US brides wear both rings on the left ring finger, with the wedding band on first. Others reserve the engagement ring for occasions and wear only the band day to day.
Which goes on first, the wedding band or the engagement ring?
The wedding band goes on first, closest to the heart, and the engagement ring sits on top. This is custom, not a rule, and fit or comfort can justify reversing the order.
Do you spend more on the engagement ring or the wedding band?
The engagement ring, because the center stone drives most of its price. The Knot Real Weddings Study 2026 puts the average natural diamond ring at about $7,000 and lab-grown at about $4,300, while bands usually cost far less.
What is the three-month ring rule?
It is a De Beers advertising guideline that began as one month's salary during the Great Depression and later grew to three. It is not a financial rule, and most couples spend well under that figure.
Do men wear engagement rings?
Some do, but it remains uncommon in the US. Both spouses traditionally wear wedding bands, while the engagement ring has historically gone to the partner who was proposed to.
