Numeric dates in ambiguous formats. 04/05/26 reads as April 5th here and 4th May almost everywhere else. Spell the month.

Text that fills every millimetre. A long inscription squeezed into a narrow band comes out cramped and stops being readable. Fewer words at a legible size ages better.

Anything you have not read twice. We proof it and we will flag a spelling that looks unintended — but removing an engraving means removing metal.

Hand Engraving

Hand engraving is done with a graver, by our own engraver, at $2.00 to $4.00 a character.

The difference is visible once you know to look for it. A machine cuts every stroke to the same depth. A hand engraver varies pressure and angle through the letter, so the line swells and tapers the way a pen does. On script and on anything ornamental, hand work looks like handwriting and machine work looks like a font.

Fonts

We offer the common block, script, cursive and monogram styles, the same ones used across our personalized jewelry collection. If you have something specific in mind, bring or send it — we will review it before engraving and tell you whether it will hold at the size your piece allows.

Very fine serifs and hairline strokes can disappear at small sizes or fill in with polish. That is the kind of thing worth knowing before it is permanent, not after.

How Long Does Engraving Take?

Standard turnaround is one to two weeks for machine engraving and five to eight business days for hand engraving.

Rush service is available for an additional charge. Same-day or next-day work is often possible for simple machine engraving, depending on the item, the design and the current workload. The rush charge is quoted before we begin — ask when you drop the piece off and we will tell you straight away whether the date you need is realistic.

Can You Engrave a Ring I Already Wear?

Yes, after inspecting it.

Three things decide it. Band thickness — a shank worn thin over years may not have enough metal left to take a cut safely. Stones — some settings need protecting or unsetting first, particularly heat-sensitive ones. Condition — an existing engraving, deep scratches or previous sizing work all affect the surface.

We can also remove or replace an existing engraving, from $75. That means cutting the old text away and refinishing the surface, which takes a small amount of metal with it. On a band already thinned by wear it is not always advisable, and we will say so.

Which Metals Can You Engrave?

Most precious metals and many other engravable materials, subject to inspection.

Gold, platinum and sterling silver engrave conventionally. Titanium, tungsten and stainless steel are hard enough that we use laser engraving rather than a rotary machine.

Engraving is complimentary on qualifying items purchased at Billig Jewelers, including our personalized jewelry collection. We also engrave pieces bought anywhere else, after inspecting them.

2. How much does it usually cost to engrave a ring?

For a typical inside-band inscription of twenty to thirty characters, machine engraving works out to roughly $30 to $75. Hand engraving on the same text runs $40 to $120. We quote the exact figure before starting.
