About That Gasket

The gasket is the rubber seal that keeps water out of the case. Opening a watch compresses it; over a few battery changes it hardens and stops sealing.

We fit a new gasket for $50 when the old one needs it. Most quick-service counters do not carry gaskets at all — which is why a watch that survived years of swimming suddenly fogs up two months after a $10 battery change at a kiosk.

Pressure Testing

Water resistance testing is a standalone service starting at $125. It is not included with a battery change.

Each watch is tested against its own manufacturer's rating and the condition of its case, so the level varies by model. If your watch goes in the water, have it tested after any case opening — a rating stamped on a caseback in 1998 tells you nothing about the seals today.

How Often Should a Watch Be Serviced?

  • Quartz: a battery every one to three years. A full overhaul only if it starts running erratically.
  • Automatic and mechanical: every three to five years.
  • Swiss luxury: every two to four years, or whatever the manufacturer specifies.

The interval exists because lubricants degrade whether or not the watch is worn. Once the oil thins, metal runs on metal, and what would have been a $350 service becomes a parts problem.

Rolex and Swiss Luxury, Out of Warranty

We service Rolex out of warranty, subject to inspection and parts availability.

If your Rolex is still under warranty, take it to an authorised centre — sending it anywhere else voids the coverage. Once that period is over, you have a choice, and an independent watchmaker is usually faster and less expensive for the same work.

Vintage and Pocket Watches

We service vintage watches and pocket watches, subject to inspection and parts availability.

Older movements are often more straightforward mechanically than modern ones. The limiting factor is almost never skill — it is whether a particular part still exists. We will tell you at intake if we think sourcing will be a problem.

What We Don't Repair

We do not repair electronic or digital watches, and we do not service Apple Watch, Samsung or Garmin. Those are sealed consumer electronics rather than serviceable movements, and the manufacturer is the right place for them.

A Jeweler or the Counter at the Mall?

For a battery in a $40 watch, the counter at the mall is fine.

For anything you would be unhappy to lose, three things separate the two. A jeweler carries gaskets and replaces them; most quick-service counters do not stock them. A jeweler can pressure test the case afterwards. And a jeweler opening a screw-down caseback uses the right tool rather than a pry knife, which is why watches come back from cheap battery changes with a scarred case edge and a seal that no longer seats.

The price difference is a few dollars. The difference in what can go wrong is considerable.

Watch Repair FAQ

1. How much does it typically cost to get a watch fixed?

At Billig Jewelers, a battery starts at $15, a crystal replacement at $125, and a full overhaul at $250 for quartz or $350 for an automatic. Chronographs start at $485. Estimates are free and given before any work begins.

2. How much does a jeweler charge to put a battery in a watch?

Ours start at $15 for a standard quartz watch and $50 for Swiss or luxury pieces. A new caseback gasket, when one is needed, is $50. Water resistance testing is a separate service from $125.

3. Does Walmart change watch batteries?

Some locations do. For an inexpensive watch that is a reasonable option. For anything with a screw-down caseback, a water resistance rating you rely on, or real value, the risks are a damaged case edge and a compressed gasket that no longer seals — neither of which shows up until water gets in.

4. Can I replace the battery in my watch myself?

On a snap-back case with no water resistance, yes. On anything sealed, opening the case without the correct tool usually scars the caseback and disturbs the gasket, and the watch is no longer water resistant even when it looks fine.

5. Do Rolex watches have to be serviced by Rolex?

Only while under warranty — servicing elsewhere voids it. Out of warranty you are free to use an independent watchmaker, and we service Rolex out of warranty subject to inspection and parts availability.

6. Is it worth fixing a watch?

For a mechanical or automatic watch, almost always. A $350 overhaul on a movement designed to run for decades is straightforward maintenance. For an inexpensive quartz watch needing a full overhaul rather than a battery, replacement is usually the better use of the money — we will tell you which one you have.

7. Can a 40-year-old Seiko watch be repaired?

Usually, yes. We service vintage watches subject to inspection and parts availability. Older Seiko movements are well documented and mechanically sound; the question is whether a specific worn part can still be sourced, and we will tell you at intake.

8. Where can I get my watch repaired in Philadelphia?

Our bench is in Marlton, about a twenty-five minute drive from Center City across the Ben Franklin Bridge. Everything is done on site — no shipping, no factory centre — and estimates are free.
