Rolex and other high-end luxury pieces out of warranty — quoted after inspection, subject to parts availability. Vintage and pocket watches too. We do not repair electronic or digital watches, and we do not service Apple Watch, Samsung or Garmin.

What a full overhaul includes

1. Strip
The movement comes out of the case and is taken apart to individual components.
2. Clean
Ultrasonic cleaning removes decades of hardened oil and metal dust from every part.
3. Lubricate
Each bearing surface re-oiled with the correct viscosity for its position. Wrong oil in the wrong place is worse than no service.
4. Regulate
Worn parts replaced, watch timed and adjusted, accuracy tested, water resistance checked where appropriate.

About That Gasket

The gasket is the rubber seal that keeps water out of the case. Opening a watch compresses it; over a few battery changes it hardens and stops sealing.

We fit a new gasket for $50 when the old one needs it. We confirm the total cost with you before any work begins. For valuable, vintage or water-resistant watches, specialized tools and proper gasket inspection are especially important. We examine the case, gasket and closure method before beginning work and explain whether pressure testing is recommended.

Pressure Testing

Water resistance testing is a standalone service starting at $75. It is not included with a battery change.

Each watch is tested against its own manufacturer's rating and the condition of its case, so the level varies by model. If your watch goes in the water, have it tested after any case opening — a rating stamped on a caseback in 1998 tells you nothing about the seals today.

How Often Should a Watch Be Serviced?

Service intervals vary by brand, movement, age and how the watch is worn. Many mechanical watches benefit from servicing every five to ten years, while certain vintage or heavily used watches may need attention sooner. Some manufacturers specify considerably longer intervals — Rolex, for example, commonly suggests around ten years depending on model and use.

Always consider the manufacturer's recommendation, and have the watch inspected if its accuracy, power reserve or winding changes. Quartz watches need a battery every one to three years; a full overhaul only if the watch starts running erratically.

Rolex and Swiss Luxury, Out of Warranty

We service Rolex out of warranty, subject to inspection and parts availability.

If your Rolex is under warranty, we generally recommend contacting an authorized Rolex service center first. Work performed by an independent watchmaker or the use of non-authorized parts may affect warranty coverage.

Once the manufacturer's warranty has expired, an independent watchmaker may offer a more personalized and cost-effective option.

Vintage and Pocket Watches

We service vintage watches and pocket watches, subject to inspection and parts availability.

Older movements are often more straightforward mechanically than modern ones. The limiting factor is almost never skill — it is whether a particular part still exists. We will tell you at intake if we think sourcing will be a problem.

What We Don't Repair

We do not repair electronic or digital watches, and we do not service Apple Watch, Samsung or Garmin. Those are sealed consumer electronics rather than serviceable movements, and the manufacturer is the right place for them.

When a Watchmaker Is Worth the Extra Step

For a battery in an inexpensive watch with a snap-back case, a quick-service counter is a reasonable option.

For valuable, vintage or water-resistant watches, three things matter more. The caseback needs opening with tooling matched to its closure type. The gasket needs inspecting and, when it has hardened, replacing. And the case is worth pressure testing afterwards if you rely on the water resistance rating. We examine the case, gasket and closure method before we begin and tell you which of those steps your watch actually needs.

Our watch-service workmanship is covered for one year; the warranty applies to the specific work performed and does not cover accidental damage, normal wear or unrelated components.

Watch Repair FAQ

1. How much does it typically cost to get a watch fixed?

At Billig Jewelers, a battery starts at $15, a crystal replacement at $125, and a full overhaul at $250 for quartz or $350 for an automatic. Chronographs start at $485. Estimates are free and given before any work begins.

2. How much does a jeweler charge to put a battery in a watch?

Ours start at $15 for a standard quartz watch and $50 for Swiss or luxury pieces. A new caseback gasket, when one is needed, is $50 — we confirm the total with you before fitting one. Water resistance testing is a separate service from $75.

3. Will my watch still be water-resistant after a battery replacement?

Not automatically. Opening a case compresses the gasket that keeps water out, and a gasket that has hardened over several battery changes may no longer seal. We inspect the gasket at every battery replacement and fit a new one for $50 when it needs it. If you rely on the rating — swimming, showering, water sports — have the case pressure tested afterwards, from $75. A rating stamped on a caseback years ago says nothing about the seals today.

4. Can I replace the battery in my watch myself?

On a snap-back case with no water resistance, yes. On anything sealed, opening the case without the correct tool usually scars the caseback and disturbs the gasket, and the watch is no longer water resistant even when it looks fine.

5. Do Rolex watches have to be serviced by Rolex?

No, but while the watch is under warranty we generally recommend contacting an authorized Rolex service center first, because independent work or non-authorized parts may affect coverage. Once the manufacturer's warranty has expired you are free to choose, and we service Rolex out of warranty subject to inspection and parts availability.

6. Is it worth fixing a watch?

For a mechanical or automatic watch, almost always. A $350 overhaul on a movement designed to run for decades is straightforward maintenance. For an inexpensive quartz watch needing a full overhaul rather than a battery, replacement is usually the better use of the money — we will tell you which one you have.

7. Can a 40-year-old Seiko watch be repaired?

Usually, yes. We service vintage watches subject to inspection and parts availability. Older Seiko movements are well documented and mechanically sound; the question is whether a specific worn part can still be sourced, and we will tell you at intake.

8. Where can I get my watch repaired in Philadelphia?

Our bench is in Marlton, about a twenty-five minute drive from Center City across the Ben Franklin Bridge. Everything is done on site — no shipping, no factory center — and estimates are free.
