Is It Cheaper to Size a Ring Up or Down?

At our bench, sizing up and sizing down are priced the same. The variables that move the price are the metal, the number of sizes, and the ring's construction — not the direction.

That differs from the industry rule of thumb, which says sizing up costs more because the jeweler has to add matching metal. We do add metal going up, but for most rings the labour difference is small enough that we do not charge separately for it.

Beyond that, the shank starts to lose the proportions it was designed with, and reshanking or remaking is usually the better answer.

Which Rings Cannot Be Resized?

We routinely resize gold, platinum and sterling silver.

Tungsten and ceramic generally cannot be resized by traditional methods. Both are too hard to cut and rejoin; they are pressed and ground rather than worked, so there is nothing to solder. Replacement or remaking is the usual route, and our repair bench will tell you which applies.

Titanium we evaluate individually. Some titanium designs can be altered; others cannot, and the difference is in the alloy and the construction rather than the metal itself.

Stainless steel, cobalt and other non-traditional metals are also looked at case by case.

Alternatives: Sizing Beads and Ring Guards

If a ring cannot be sized — or you want the option reversible — two smaller fixes work:

• Sizing beads, starting at $125. Two small beads soldered inside the shank take up slack and stop a ring spinning. Useful when a knuckle is larger than the base of the finger.
• Ring guard fitting, starting at $50, usually done in a day. A guard tightens the fit without altering the ring at all.

Will Resizing Leave a Mark?

On most rings, no. A properly executed joint in gold or platinum is invisible under normal wear.

The honest exception is unusual alloys. When a ring is made from a standard 14k or 18k alloy we can match the solder exactly. When it is an unusual mix — some vintage pieces, some designer alloys — the closest available match can read very slightly different in certain light. We will tell you at drop-off if we expect that.

We size rings from any jeweler after inspecting them. You do not need a receipt and we do not charge extra for it.

If you bought your ring here, resizing is free for life — not for a year, not within thirty days. For as long as you own it.
